Kylie Henman;

your queer, tattooed therapist

therapist | founder

Hi there. My name is Kylie. I am an individual, family and couple’s therapist and counsellor and I would like to welcome you to my website.

I am an openly queer human, and I’ve got a wealth of professional experience with both LGBTIQ+ and mental health issues. I have been described as the person you come to see when you feel the traditional counselling model doesn’t suit you, and you are looking for someone relatable… I loved that- it suits me perfectly!

As a social worker-turned-mh professional I believe in assessing your concerns holistically. This ensures we account for your specific circumstances and environment as we build your plan and goals.

My practice comes from a framework where I believe I am not the expert in your life- you are, and we will work from that understanding.

I have experienced personal trauma and sought assistance to develop skills to work through that. During that period of growth I realised I want to support others who are struggling with the “where to now?!” So… I went back to uni to build the professional skills required to do that. I believe this journey has enhanced my sense of empathy for clients, families and their loved ones.

Many clients come to see me for support with accepting themselves, recognising their boundaries, and identifying defensive behaviours – where they come from, and assessing whether there is benefit in changing them. Together we explore the varied reasons you’re struggling

You can book your first session directly on my website. If you’d like to chat to see if we’re a good fit, give me a call or send me an email.

ABOUT ME

I hold a first-class honours degree in social work and a dual diploma in Alcohol and other drugs, and Mental Health- along with a diploma in counselling. I am a registered NDIS provider. I have training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Therapy and Narrative Therapy. I am currently undertaking post graduate training to become a registered sexologist, and would be honoured to support you in this area.

I studied “Empowering Women in the 21st Century” in Portugal and this opportunity has framed my practice. I am skilled in working with a variety of presentations. I utilise an eclectic combination of counselling techniques and interventions such as those mentioned above, alongside solution focused therapy. I am committed to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice with a focus on the individual person.

I have been trusted to support many people during my career and it is this trust and my client’s progress that drives me.  I provide a safe, welcoming place for my clients to share their struggles… In this space, we can work together to create a plan that works for you.

“Shame literally robs the brain of the energy it needs to do the work of changing. And worse, when we feel shame, we want to avoid it, so we hide from those parts of ourselves that we’re ashamed of the parts that most need our attention.”
